Jacob Mafume hails Mnangagwa's Second Republic

Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has commended President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his administration for spearheading transformative world-class projects in the capital, which are helping the city reclaim its renowned "Sunshine City" status.
Addressing delegates at the Zimbabwe Local Government Association's "All Councillors Indaba" in Harare on Tuesday, Mayor Mafume highlighted key developments initiated under the Second Republic, including the Geo Pomona Waste Management Plant, the New Parliament Building, the revamped Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, and the near-complete Mbudzi Interchange.
Expressing his gratitude, Mayor Mafume dismissed critics who doubted the feasibility of such advancements, acknowledging the President's leadership and the support extended to the capital.
"Our Call to Action was issued. Some thought it was a means to punish us, but we must all agree that it helps us do our jobs. We thank His Excellency for that," he said.
The Mayor reflected on how Harare's transformation has defied expectations:
"Some claimed it would take forever for Harare to achieve world-class status. If someone who passed away decades ago woke up in 2024, they would be astonished by the world-class airport, Parliament, roads, and the Mbudzi Interchange in Harare," said Councillor Mafume.
Mayor Mafume highlighted the partnership with Geo Pomona Waste Management as a key example of progress in basic service delivery. The private sector's involvement, he said, complements Government efforts to improve urban living conditions.
"What is needed now is for us as councillors to complement this vision by addressing service delivery issues, such as waste collection and management," he said.
The Mayor urged President Mnangagwa to extend the same level of support to other local authorities across Zimbabwe, praising the assistance Harare has received under the stewardship of Local Government and Public Works Minister Dr. Daniel Garwe.
"So, Mr. President, I ask that the help extended to Harare also be extended to other councils. We are grateful for the improvements seen in our conditions of service," he added.
President Mnangagwa has consistently emphasized the need for local authorities to prioritize service delivery and engage communities effectively.
"It is of paramount importance that we respond to the calls of our people for sustainable, efficient, and affordable services. All stakeholders, at every level, should prioritize regular consultations with the people. No one and no place must be left behind," the President said.
With Government support and private sector involvement, Harare is on track to regain its status as a leading city in the region, offering modern infrastructure and improved services for residents and visitors alike.
