New arrest in flashy car theft case

Another suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft of a South African-registered Toyota Fortuner in Bulawayo, a case that has garnered significant public attention due to the alleged involvement of prominent car dealer and socialite, Brighton Chipunza, also known as "Dash."

While police have remained tight-lipped about the new development to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations, sources indicate that the suspect was apprehended yesterday afternoon and is cooperating with law enforcement.

"He is the one who stole the car with Chipunza and is a vital component of the investigations," a police source revealed.

Last week, Chipunza was denied bail after the court ruled that he posed a flight risk and could interfere with witnesses. Bulawayo regional magistrate Mrs. Benhilda Chiundura delivered the ruling, leaving Chipunza visibly shocked in the dock.

Chipunza, who was arrested nearly two weeks ago, is alleged to have stolen the luxury vehicle from the Tunnel Car Wash in the city centre on November 18. He is due to appear for routine remand on December 11.

During his court appearance, Chipunza claimed he had been assaulted by a prison guard, identified as Gore, while being held in the magistrate's court holding cells. He alleged the assault caused hearing difficulties in his right ear and severe headaches. However, the claims were not substantiated in court.

The investigation began after the vehicle's owner, Ms. Ncube, reported the theft. Using GPS tracking, the stolen vehicle was traced to Harare, leading to the arrest of another suspect, Julius Chitunhu, who was released on bail of ZWG10,000.

Evidence presented by the prosecution, led by Mr. Dominic Moyo, includes WhatsApp messages between Chipunza, a suspected buyer, and Chitunhu, suggesting the existence of a car theft syndicate. The digital records reportedly link Chipunza directly to the planning and execution of the crime.

According to the State, Ms. Ncube had entrusted her Toyota Fortuner to her employee, Jonathan Ngando Thuli, for cleaning at Tunnel Car Wash. After being cleaned, the car was parked under a tree, locked, and the keys secured by an employee.

When Ms. Ncube returned later in the day, the vehicle was missing. Car wash employees informed her of the theft, prompting her to file a police report.

The latest arrest has deepened suspicions that Chipunza may be part of a broader car theft ring. Authorities have vowed to follow all leads and bring the perpetrators to justice, raising questions about the scope of organised car theft operations in the region.
