According to Midlands Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the robbery occurred on December 1, 2024, at the Shambanebanga bus stop in Chiundura. The two victims were travelling from Gweru to Chiundura when they were ambushed by three men wielding dangerous weapons including a machete, knife, and an electric shocker.
Mahoko explained that the suspects approached the travellers shortly after they exited the bus and demanded money. When the complainants refused to comply, the robbers turned violent, assaulting the victims. "One of the complainants was struck on the head with a machete, while the other was electrocuted by an electric shocker," Mahoko stated.
After the assault, the suspects searched the victims and made off with a total of US$4,400, two cellphones, and two pairs of sneakers. The suspects then fled the scene in a silver Honda Fit vehicle with registration number AEJ 9906, which had been parked nearby.
However, their escape was short-lived. The robbers drove to Chizhou business centre, where they experienced a tyre puncture. While they were attempting to change the tyre, a witness alerted a police officer stationed at the centre. The officer quickly mobilized the public to assist in capturing the suspects.
One of the robbers, identified as Everson Madzore (40) from Old Ascot, Gweru, was apprehended at the scene, while the other two managed to escape. Police have not recovered any of the stolen goods.
"The total value stolen is US$4,570, and we are still investigating the matter. We appeal to the public for assistance in locating the two suspects who managed to flee the scene," Mahoko said.
Police have called for any information that could help identify the remaining suspects involved in the robbery, which took place near Holy Cross Dam in Chirumhanzu at around 4:00 PM.
Authorities are urging members of the public to come forward with any leads that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
