A haulage truck driver tragically lost his life in a fiery accident along the Harare-Chirundu Highway at the 227-kilometre peg on Thursday last week. The incident occurred after a head-on collision with a Honda Fit vehicle, causing the truck to overturn and burst into flames.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera confirmed the accident, which happened around 11:30 AM.

According to Inspector Kohwera, the Honda Fit, registration number AGG 9412, was traveling from Kariba to Harare with one passenger on board when it veered into the lane of an oncoming Freightliner haulage truck, registration number AGJ 1339, towing a lime-loaded trailer.

"On reaching the 227km peg, the driver of the Honda Fit encroached into the lane of the haulage truck, resulting in the head-on collision," said Insp Kohwera.

The Honda Fit overturned once and landed upright, crossing back into its lane. Meanwhile, the haulage truck veered off the road, tipped onto its left side, and caught fire, trapping the driver inside.
Fatal Consequences

The truck driver was burnt beyond recognition. The Honda Fit driver sustained injuries and was taken to Karoi District Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. The passenger in the Honda Fit escaped unscathed.

Inspector Kohwera expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents and urged motorists to prioritize safety.

"We continue to urge drivers to exercise extra caution when driving and to adhere to the road rules and regulations to avoid loss of life and property," he said.

This accident highlights the critical importance of road safety, particularly on major highways like the Harare-Chirundu route, where high traffic volumes and heavy vehicles increase the risk of fatal crashes.
