Zimbabwe's Young Warriors secured a spot in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations COSAFA qualifiers as the best runner-up following a dramatic 4-4 draw against Namibia in their final Group B match yesterday. Despite conceding a late equalizer, Zimbabwe advanced on superior goal scoring, edging Mozambique for the best runner-up spot.
The semi-final line-up is now complete, with Zimbabwe set to face Angola at UJ AW Muller Stadium at midday tomorrow. The other semi-final pits Zambia against hosts South Africa at 3pm.
The Young Warriors' final group game was a rollercoaster of emotions. Namibia took an early lead through Adriano Gawab, who capitalized on a defensive error in the 11th minute. Zimbabwe equalized in the 35th minute when El Shaddai Sadomba pounced on a rebound, and Valentine Macheka's powerful long-range strike put Zimbabwe ahead just before halftime.
In the second half, Namibia's Brayton Paulse leveled the score in the 52nd minute following another defensive misstep. Zimbabwe then surged ahead with two quick goals in the 77th and 79th minutes, courtesy of Tadiwa Chakuchichi and Sadomba, who completed his brace. However, Namibia struck back immediately, with Christiano Useb and substitute Montgomery Karuaihe scoring late to force a draw.
Despite the draw, Zimbabwe's overall tally of 10 goals in the tournament secured their semi-final berth ahead of Mozambique, who had the same points and goal difference but scored fewer goals.
Zimbabwe's Under-17 girls' team failed to progress after a 1-3 defeat to Botswana in their final group match. Alicia Chinyoka opened the scoring for Zimbabwe in the 24th minute, but Botswana equalized before halftime through Shirley Tokonyane. Additional goals from Hope Lesotlo and Keotshepile Kesetse sealed Botswana's victory, leaving Zimbabwe out of contention.
In the boys' competition, the three group winners – Zambia, South Africa, and Angola – were already determined ahead of the final pool games. Zimbabwe's matchup against Angola is set to be a tough contest as both teams vie for a spot in the final.
In the girls' tournament, Madagascar stunned defending champions South Africa with a 1-0 victory to reach the semi-finals for the first time. Madagascar will face Zambia, while Lesotho takes on Mozambique in the last four.
Zimbabwe's Young Warriors will aim to build on their high-scoring performances when they take on Angola tomorrow. The team's resilience and attacking prowess could prove decisive as they chase a spot in the final of the COSAFA U-17 qualifiers.
