A 22-year-old man, Benson Macharangwanda, from Chitungwiza, has been charged with murder following the death of an alleged intruder during a confrontation at his home on December 2.
Macharangwanda appeared before a Harare magistrate on Monday, where he was remanded in custody while awaiting an indictment from the High Court. According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the incident occurred at around 4:30 AM when Macharangwanda's anti-theft alarm, which was connected to his phone, was activated, alerting him to an intruder in his room.
The court heard that Macharangwanda, who had US$250 placed in the pouch of his phone, woke up upon hearing the alarm. He noticed the now-deceased man attempting to steal the phone by fishing it through a window. Macharangwanda then pursued the intruder, following the sound of the activated alarm, and confronted him.
Upon catching up with the intruder, who was not named in court, Macharangwanda demanded that he return the phone. The accused then led the intruder to his room, where a fight broke out. During the altercation, the deceased allegedly produced a knife and attempted to stab Macharangwanda.

However, Macharangwanda successfully blocked the knife with the help of his landlady, who shouted to alert him of the danger. During the scuffle, Macharangwanda managed to retrieve his phone from the intruder's shorts.
The court heard that the deceased was then escorted out of the premises. However, as he left, he began complaining about the injuries he had sustained during the confrontation. The man was taken to Chitungwiza Hospital by his relatives but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Macharangwanda now faces charges of murder as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the intruder. The case has drawn attention to the legal implications of self-defense and property protection in Zimbabwe.
