Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the appointment of Portuguese-born mentor Miguel Cardoso as the club's new head coach.
The announcement was made at the club's base in Chloorkop on Tuesday and comes as somewhat of a surprise considering that Mngqithi had been at the helm for just over five months.
The new man in charge had his last stint with North African giants Esperance de Tunis, who knocked Sundowns out of the CAF Champions League at the semi-finals stage last season.
Cardoso has also managed Spanish side Celta De la Vigo and served as assistant coach at Russian outfit Shaktar Donestsk.
Mngqithi took over in July when the club announced the exit of previous head coach Rulani Mokwena. The former Golden Arrows coach then recruited Romain Folz and Steve Komphela as an assistant and senior coach respectively.
However, Mngqithi is understood have been under pressure at the club in recent times due to recent results.
By their high standards, The Brazilians have had a lukewarm start to their season.
They crashed out of the MTN8 in semi-final after losing both home and away legs to Stellenbosch, and to make matters worse, let a 1-0 lead slip in the Carling Knockout final, losing 2-1 to Magesi FC.
The Betway Premiership is where the Tshwane giants have maintained their dominance, sitting at the summit of the standings with eight wins from seven matches, although rivals Pirates are hot on their heels with the exact numbers of points in the same periods but a lower goal difference.
The CAF Champions League - the crown jewel of the club's aspirations - is perhaps where they are yet to find their feet this season. The Mngqithi-led side has failed to win either of their opening two fixtures in the group stage and is sitting second in Group B.
Folz and goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson have also been let go.
