A 31-year-old man, part of an armed robbery gang targeting cross-border travelers in South Africa, has been sentenced to an effective 10 years in jail by the Beitbridge Regional Court.

Nomore Shava was arrested after robbing a woman of a Toyota Runx vehicle, two cellphones, and R6,000 in Musina, South Africa. His accomplices remain at large.

The incident occurred on November 5 at around 3 a.m. when the victim arrived in Musina to visit a relative. As she disembarked from her vehicle, Shava and his gang approached, brandishing a black pistol. They took her car keys, two cellphones, and cash before fleeing in her vehicle. The stolen items were valued at R66,000.

The victim reported the matter to the police in Musina before returning to Beitbridge. Through a SIM swap, she managed to track her stolen phone to a local dealer in Dulivhadzimu. Collaborating with cellphone dealers, she located the phones, which Shava had given to the dealer to sell on his behalf.

An ambush was set up by the police, leading to Shava's arrest when he came to collect his proceeds from the dealer.

Although Shava denied the charges, Beitbridge Regional Magistrate Charity Maphosa convicted him based on the overwhelming evidence presented by prosecutor Willbrought Muleya.

The case highlights a growing concern over criminal gangs preying on travelers in cross-border areas. Authorities are urging travelers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
