Enterprising villagers from Buhera Central Constituency in partnership with the Forest Commission recently conducted a successful three-day tree planting training workshop at Chief Nyashanu's homestead in Kandenga village.

The participants were drawn from the 8 wards which make up Buhera Central Constituency.

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of this crucial workshop, an upbeat Chief Nyashanu said he was humbled that people were starting to understand issues to do with global threat of climate change and are prepared to take action borrowing from President Emmerson Munangangwa's clarion call that a nation is built by its own.

"As an educationist and traditional leader, I always make a passionate plea against the decimation of our forests for whatever reason. While some people are being fooled by the drama and negativity on social media I am proud there are people within my area of jurisdiction who are patriotic and energetic, with amazing ideas for their area and country. This training workshop emphatically confirmed that indeed "Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo" and it is being built "Brick by Brick" as President Mnangagwa has been preaching," he said.

The team leader, the indefatigable Jestina Chingono brimming with confidence was bullish declaring in no uncertain terms that the program was doable and the vision attainable.

"As we embark on this afforestation and reafforestation drive we are targeting to plant more than 100 000 indigenous and 150 000 exotic trees by year 2030. Of course, this might sound ambitious but we are going to be aggressive in our approach and its doable and the vision attainable", she said.

Chingono also added that it was gratifying to see that locals had taken upon themselves to regreen their Constituency acknowledging the magnanimous support they received from the traditional leadership.

Headman Wilson Chirozva who also attended the training workshop said despite the longheld perception that traditional leaders tend to be lenient when it comes to the enforcement of the law against the cutting down of trees this was going to be a thing of the past and there will be no sacred cows.
