In a heart-warming display of generosity, Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister Raj Modi yesterday brightened the lives of 100 elderly residents from various suburbs in Bulawayo. Through his annual festive initiative, Modi donated food hampers and US$50 grocery vouchers, offering much-needed support to those struggling during the holiday season.

The handover ceremony took place at Liquor Hub Wholesalers, a business owned by Modi in Bulawayo. Beneficiaries from suburbs including Sizinda, Tshabalala, and others were in attendance, each receiving a food hamper and voucher to help ease their festive season.

Mrs. Olivia Charamba, 67, a resident of Sizinda suburb, expressed her gratitude for the donation, noting the emotional impact it had on her. "The community often forgets the elderly, and this donation made me feel loved and remembered. Christmas is a time of thanksgiving, and this initiative has ignited a spirit of unity and a sense of being valued in my heart," she said. Charamba added that, before receiving the hamper, her family was struggling with no means of celebrating the holiday.

Another recipient, Mrs. Thembekile Nyoni from Tshabalala, echoed similar sentiments. "I had no idea how I was going to provide for my family this Christmas. This gesture has brought much-needed relief. I feel honoured to be part of this initiative by Deputy Minister Raj Modi. I will now have a decent Christmas with my family," she said.

Deputy Minister Modi, who has been actively assisting vulnerable members of society for the past nine years, shared his dedication to supporting the community. "Every year, we invite the elderly and other vulnerable members of society to receive food hampers so that they can enjoy Christmas. This is a tradition we've been doing for nine years," he said.

In his efforts to ensure that the donations reached those who needed them most, Modi partnered with various resident associations to identify beneficiaries. The process took about two weeks, with associations helping to highlight the elderly and vulnerable individuals in need.

The grocery vouchers, valued at US$50 each, will provide a significant boost to families struggling to afford meals during the festive season. "I am aware that during Christmas, some people in our communities have difficulty affording decent meals," said Modi. "The US$50 grocery voucher will help them feed their families and bring a smile to their faces this festive season."

Deputy Minister Modi's gesture brought joy to many in the community, proving that the spirit of Christmas extends beyond the family home to embrace those who are often overlooked. Through this continued tradition, Modi has shown his commitment to improving the lives of Bulawayo's most vulnerable citizens.
