Police in Bulawayo have issued a stern warning to the public against taking the law into their own hands, following a tragic incident of mob justice in Lobengula suburb. In a statement, Bulawayo Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, urged residents to avoid resorting to violence and to ensure that any suspects are handed over to the police for proper legal action.
The warning comes after the death of a man in Lobengula, who was allegedly killed by two community members after they suspected him of theft. The victim, accompanied by three other men, had reportedly robbed one of the accused, Advice Dibula, of his Samsung A23 mobile phone and earphones.
The incident took place on the early morning of December 21, around 3 AM, as the group of men were returning home from Marisha Night Club in Old Magwegwe suburb. Upon encountering the accused, the deceased and his group allegedly began assaulting them with unknown objects, without any provocation. During the confrontation, the deceased forcefully took the mobile phone and earphones from one of the accused.
Assistant Inspector Msebele detailed the sequence of events: "One of the men was assaulted by the deceased, who struck him in the face three times with his fists, causing him to fall to the ground. The other men managed to escape and alerted the residents, who then informed the police."
Upon arrival, the police found the deceased lying unconscious on the ground, bleeding from his mouth and with a head wound. An ambulance was called, and the victim was transported to Mpilo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was later taken to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The two accused, Advice Dibula (36) and Khulekelani Mhlanga (43), both residents of Lobengula West, were arrested in connection with the murder.
Asst. Insp Msebele emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement to handle criminal cases, highlighting that vigilante justice often leads to tragic consequences. "We strongly urge the public to refrain from taking matters into their own hands. It is vital to allow the police to do their work to ensure justice is served appropriately."
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of mob justice and the importance of abiding by the law to maintain peace and order in the community. Police continue to investigate the matter as they work to bring those responsible to justice.
