Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has promoted six colonels in the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) to the rank of Brigadier-General. The promotions, effective December 16, 2024, were made under the Defence Act (Chapter 11:02) Section 20, as read with Statutory Instrument 257 of 2020, Section 19c, Sub-section 2c. This statute empowers the President, on the advice of the Minister of Defence and recommendations from the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, to reward distinguished service or gallant conduct with promotion to a higher rank.
The newly promoted officers are Brigadier Generals Oscar Tshuma, Raban Nikisi, Benjamin Sabata, Passmore Taruodzera, Million Ndlovu, and Lawrence Munzararikwa.
During the conferment ceremony held at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks in Harare, Commander of the ZNA, Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe, highlighted the need to address the growing threat of drug and substance abuse, which he described as a national security concern.
"In addition to the challenges of training and operational readiness, we must also confront the scourge of drug and substance abuse. The entire nation is grappling with this issue, and our organisation has not been spared. The threat of drug and substance abuse undermines the very foundations and values of military effectiveness and the trust placed upon us by the nation," said Lt Gen Sanyatwe.
Turning to the promotions, Lt Gen Sanyatwe underscored that they are a testament to the hard work and loyalty demonstrated by the officers. "Promotions are characterised by an increase in duties and responsibilities, and yours will be no exception. You must ensure that personnel under your command are empowered, encourage their growth, and foster an environment where they can thrive," he added.
The Lieutenant General further noted that Zimbabwe is undergoing a transitional phase of economic and institutional revitalisation, requiring complementary efforts from all sectors, including the military.
Brigadier General Benjamin Sabata, who has been assigned as Brigadier General Quarter Master Staff at Army Headquarters, expressed his gratitude for the promotion and pledged loyalty to the Constitution and the command structure of the ZDF. "We undertake to be always loyal to the Constitution and command establishment of the ZDF and to serve the people of Zimbabwe. I also thank Commander ZNA and his team for mentoring us throughout our military careers," said Brig Gen Sabata.
Brigadier General Million Ndlovu echoed these sentiments, committing to continue working hard for the betterment of the army and the nation at large.
The promotions underscore the dedication and professionalism within the ZNA, aligning with the broader vision of strengthening the country's defence and national development goals.
