South African police have captured Zimbabwean national Lovemore Musoyi, who had been on the run since 2023 after escaping from custody in Mpumalanga Province. Musoyi, who faces over 10 criminal charges, was apprehended last week by a task force from the South African Police Service (SAPS), ending a year-long manhunt.
In a statement, SAPS confirmed the arrest and commended the joint efforts of law enforcement and private security personnel.
“The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, hailed the collaborative efforts between SAPS and private security personnel who worked tirelessly to track and apprehend the elusive fugitive. He had been on the run after escaping police custody, during which he attacked and disarmed two police officers in Motetema,” read the statement.
Musoyi, 32, is accused of a range of serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, business robbery, housebreaking, kidnapping, stock theft, assault, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. These offenses were allegedly committed across several areas, including Elandskraal, Motetema, Dennilton, and Rakgoadi, within the Sekhukhune District.
The fugitive was arrested on January 3 after police received a tip-off that he was hiding in the mountains of Rakgoadi. He was reportedly armed with an unlicensed firearm at the time of his capture.
Musoyi's 2023 escape had sparked outrage after he attacked two police officers and fled while being transported to prison. Since then, he had evaded authorities despite extensive efforts to apprehend him.
The suspect is now set to appear before multiple magistrates' courts in the Sekhukhune District to face the numerous charges against him. Authorities have lauded the collaborative efforts that led to his arrest and have reaffirmed their commitment to bringing criminals to justice.
