The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has announced the 2024 A-Level results, with the national pass rate standing at 94.58%, maintaining consistency with the previous year's performance.

Addressing a press conference in Harare, ZIMSEC board chairperson, Professor Paul Mapfumo, expressed satisfaction with the results and praised the collective efforts of students, teachers, and all stakeholders involved.

A total of 33,585 candidates sat for the November 2024 A-Level examinations, a slight decrease from the 34,437 who sat in 2023. Among these, 33,246 candidates wrote two or more subjects, with 31,443 achieving a Grade E or better.

Gender performance showed a significant improvement among female candidates, who recorded a pass rate of 95.94% for those who sat for two or more subjects, an increase from 92.32% in 2023.

"We are thrilled to see our female candidates excelling and continuing to outperform their male counterparts," said Prof Mapfumo.

Male candidates posted a pass rate of 93.13%, slightly lower than the previous year's 93.95%. However, their overall performance remained steady.

"While the performance of male candidates remains steady, there is always room for improvement," Prof Mapfumo added.

Candidates with special needs also achieved impressive results, with 95% (38 out of 40 candidates) attaining a Grade E or better. This represented a substantial improvement from the 84.62% pass rate recorded in 2023.

"The success of our special needs candidates reflects the ongoing efforts to make education more inclusive and accessible," noted Prof Mapfumo.

Out of the 29,041 school candidates, 28,900 wrote two or more subjects, and 27,509 passed, resulting in a pass rate of 95.18%, which closely mirrored the 95.19% recorded in 2023. Private candidates numbered 4,544 in 2024, with 4,346 sitting for two or more subjects. Of these, 3,934 passed, yielding a pass rate of 90.52%. This was slightly lower than the 90.57% achieved in 2023.

Candidates were able to access their results online via the ZIMSEC portal, which opened at 4 pm yesterday and will remain active for five days. Heads of examination centres will collect the results for their schools from provincial offices on Monday, January 13.

Prof Mapfumo extended his gratitude to everyone involved in the administration of the exams, highlighting the collective effort required to maintain the integrity of the system.

"We would like to thank the school administrators, teachers, markers, and other stakeholders for their dedication. The successful completion of these exams is a direct result of the collaborative effort to uphold the integrity of the examination process," he said.

The 2024 A-Level results reflect not only the strength of Zimbabwe's education system but also the resilience and dedication of its students, teachers, and education stakeholders.
