Binga, Zimbabwe - Three people tragically lost their lives on Wednesday when a vehicle they were traveling in struck an anti-tank mine near Sebungwe Mouth in Binga. The incident has underscored the ongoing danger posed by landmines left over from the liberation struggle.

The victims were Binga Rural District Council employees who were returning from work. The driver, Micka Munsaka, attempted to avoid potholes on the main road and took a shortcut, unknowingly driving over the buried mine.

Lieutenant Colonel Tichafa Mungofa, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed that the explosion was caused by an anti-tank mine, likely exposed by recent heavy rains. He emphasized that the area was not marked as a minefield.

This incident has sparked renewed calls for intensified demining efforts. Tendai Chirau, Deputy Secretary for National Security of the ZANU PF Politburo, expressed his sadness over the loss of life in a Facebook post, blaming the tragedy on mines planted by the "colonial satanic and racist Rhodesians." He highlighted the ongoing need to clear these dangerous remnants of the past.

The incident has also highlighted the urgent need for improved mine awareness education for local communities.
