Girls shine in 2024 Zimsec A-level exams, outperform boys by 2.81%

Girls achieved a stellar performance in the November 2024 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) Advanced Level exams, surpassing boys by 2.81% in the pass rate.
The overall pass rate for the exams stood at 94.58%, a slight dip from the 94.60% recorded in 2023. According to Zimsec, 33,585 candidates participated in the examinations, which is 852 fewer than the previous year. Out of these, 33,246 candidates sat for two or more subjects, and 31,443 attained Grade E or better in those subjects.
School candidates posted a strong performance with a pass rate of 95.18%, while private candidates achieved a commendable 90.52%. Girls led the charge with a remarkable pass rate of 95.94%, outpacing boys, who scored 92.05%. This marks a significant shift from 2023, where boys led with 93.95%, while girls recorded 93.32%.
In total, 17,306 girls sat for the 2024 exams compared to 16,092 boys.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Zimsec board chairperson, Professor Paul Mapfumo, announced that candidates could access their results online via the Zimsec portal starting January 10, 2025. The portal will remain open for five days, providing access to candidates and authorised personnel.
Additionally, physical copies of the results will be available for collection by heads of examination centres at Zimsec's regional offices from Monday, January 13, 2025.
The results highlight the continued excellence of Zimbabwean students, with particular emphasis on the strides made by female candidates in bridging and exceeding previous performance gaps.
