The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) has embarked on an ambitious project to build five secondary schools in Beitbridge, Victoria Falls, Bulawayo, Beatrice, and Mvuma, funded in part by a generous US$1 million donation from businessman Mr. Wicknell Chivayo.

ZCC leader Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi visited the Beitbridge site yesterday and expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far. He revealed that the church had engaged a contractor previously involved in constructing the new Parliament building to ensure quality civil works.

Currently, Beitbridge District has 71 primary schools and 18 secondary schools, a number insufficient to meet the needs of its growing population. The new school, named Gurukudera Academy, is expected to address this gap. During his visit, Bishop Mutendi, an advocate for environmental conservation, also planted a tree at the site.

"Improving the education system and promoting environmental conservation are critical roles that churches should support," said Bishop Mutendi. "We are committed to building more schools in Zimbabwe and ensuring a brighter future for the young generation. Additionally, I urge Zimbabweans to respect traditional leaders and elected officials, as they are appointed by God."

The Beitbridge school project, initiated in June last year, is set to open its doors in the second term of this year, according to ZCC construction project manager Mr. Inock Moyo.

"Our focus at the moment is completing the science block alongside several classroom blocks. We are also working on hostels and staff cottages, with the construction progressing in phases," said Mr. Moyo.

The other schools, including one in Mvuma at Dombo raSamere - a heritage site significant to ZCC founder Rev. Samuel Mutendi - will follow a similar design.

The donation from Mr. Chivayo, combined with the church’s ongoing fundraising efforts, is being strategically allocated to ensure the successful completion of these educational facilities.

These schools mark a significant investment in Zimbabwe’s education sector, reflecting ZCC’s commitment to national development and youth empowerment.
