Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has confirmed the government's readiness to implement constitutional amendments extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term beyond 2028, should formal instructions be issued.

Speaking yesterday, Minister Ziyambi stated that such amendments align with the democratic will of the people, as resolved by Zanu-PF at its Annual National People's Conference in Bulawayo last year.

"It is possible to enact these amendments when the time is right and when we receive the instructions. Zimbabwe is a democracy guided by the will of the people. If the people say they want the President's term extended, so be it," said Minister Ziyambi.

Minister Ziyambi noted that while President Mnangagwa initially indicated his willingness to step down as required by the Constitution, public sentiment has leaned heavily toward extending his tenure.

"The people who voted him into office have expressed their wish for him to stay on. The necessary legal framework can be established to reflect this will," he added.

Zanu-PF's resolution to extend the President's term was driven by the desire to allow him to complete ongoing development projects initiated under his administration.

In a surprising turn, the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has also voiced support for the extension. During a weekend tour of the First Family's Pricabe Farm in Kwekwe, leader of the opposition in Parliament, Mr. Sengezo Tshabangu, endorsed the proposal.

"If we approve your [President Mnangagwa's] stay in power and the people of Zimbabwe are happy, let it be," said Mr. Tshabangu.

He praised the President's leadership across various sectors and called for unity among Zimbabweans.

"We are Zimbabweans; we should be singing, playing, and celebrating together. When we go to Parliament, we will unpack the blueprint to bring Zimbabweans together. Coexistence is key," he said.

Support for President Mnangagwa's extended term is widespread within Zanu-PF structures, with many lauding his tangible developmental achievements.

"President Mnangagwa's leadership has delivered results that resonate with the masses," said a party official.

If enacted, the amendments would see the President's term extended to 2030, allowing him to oversee the completion of significant national projects and continue his developmental agenda.

The proposal reflects a growing consensus among political leaders and the broader population to prioritize continuity and unity in Zimbabwe's governance.
