The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to motorists to exercise caution on the roads amid a worrying rise in hit-and-run accidents, particularly during the night.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi highlighted concerns over an increase in fatal road traffic accidents during the festive season, emphasizing the need for drivers to prioritize safety.

"In some fatal road traffic accidents recorded, pedestrians were killed during the night while crossing the roads," Nyathi said, expressing alarm over the growing trend of drivers failing to stop after causing accidents.

Nyathi cited a tragic incident on January 1, when a 23-year-old man died on the spot after being hit by an unidentified motorist who fled the scene along Khami Road near the DA service station in Bulawayo.

The ZRP has urged drivers to adhere to road safety rules, particularly during the festive period when traffic volumes and the risk of accidents tend to increase.

"Drivers must exercise extreme caution and prioritize road safety," Nyathi said.

He reminded motorists of their legal and moral obligations in the event of an accident.

"Drivers should stop and render first aid to the victims and promptly report the accident to the police," he added.

The festive season often sees an increase in road accidents across Zimbabwe, with high traffic volumes, reckless driving, and night-time travel contributing to the risk. The ZRP has vowed to intensify road safety campaigns and enforce traffic regulations to curb accidents and ensure public safety.

Pedestrians and drivers are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement authorities to reduce the prevalence of hit-and-run incidents and save lives.
