The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating two separate violent incidents involving Chinese nationals in the Midlands and Matabeleland South provinces.

On January 21, 2025, a labour dispute at Bijour Farm in Lower Gweru, Midlands Province, escalated into violence. Kholwani Dube (38) allegedly stabbed a Chinese national in the leg with an okapi knife during the altercation. In response, the Chinese national reportedly pointed a firearm at Dube.

Both individuals are now facing criminal charges, with police confirming that investigations are underway. The incident highlights ongoing tensions in labour relations at some workplaces, particularly involving foreign employers and local workers.

In a separate incident on January 22, 2025, Mthahandazo Sibanda (20) was shot with a 9mm Derya pistol by a Chinese national at Binyup 5 Mine in Filabusi, Matabeleland South. According to reports, Sibanda was allegedly caught attempting to steal gold ore from the mine when the shooting occurred.

The Chinese national involved has since been arrested, and police are conducting further investigations. The incident raises concerns about security measures at mining operations and the use of firearms by mine operators in disputes involving suspected theft.

The ZRP has confirmed that investigations into both cases are ongoing and promised to release more details as they emerge. These incidents have drawn attention to growing tensions in Zimbabwe's mining and agricultural sectors, where disputes between local workers or community members and foreign nationals have occasionally turned violent.

As the investigations continue, there is an increasing call for authorities to address labour disputes, community relations, and firearm regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
