A 37-year-old soldier, Raymond Negomo Dzapasi, stationed at Inkomo Barracks, has appeared in court charged with armed robbery, alongside his accomplice, Joseph Makoni. The two men are accused of robbing Antony Njanike, 32, of R20,000 and US$3,000 after threatening him with firearms.

The accused appeared before Harare Magistrate Tilda Mazhande, who advised them to apply for bail at the High Court. Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje outlined the details of the robbery, which occurred on November 6 of last year.

It is alleged that Dzapasi and Makoni armed themselves with blank pistols and targeted Njanike, who was seated in his vehicle at Huruyadzo Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza. They allegedly manhandled Njanike before handcuffing him and stealing the money and his Samsung S23 mobile phone.

Following a swift response by detectives from the CID Homicide Unit, the two suspects were arrested at the scene.

In an unrelated case, two other soldiers, Tapiwa Sibanda (35) and Brian Chikozho (35), were granted US$50 bail each for illegal possession of copper. They appeared before Harare Magistrate Ruth Moyo after they were found in possession of 28 kilograms of copper.

Prosecutor Nomsa Kangara explained that on January 16, detectives from the CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit intercepted the two men carrying a black box along Solomon Mujuru Road in Harare. The suspects reportedly failed to produce any permit or license allowing them to possess the scrap copper, leading to their arrest.

The duo is scheduled to return to court on February 15 to face charges related to the copper possession.
