Two bus crew members were arrested after police intercepted their vehicle along the Harare-Masvingo Road and discovered 34kg of dagga along with various smuggled items.

The suspects, identified as Simbarashe Chikasha (36) and Prince Nyakudya Tirivamambo (36), were apprehended following a tip-off that led to their arrest.

In a statement, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri confirmed the incident.

"On January 21, detectives from CID Chivhu received information that a bus crew coming from Beitbridge en route to Harare had diverted its route," she said.

Acting swiftly on the tip-off, police located the bus parked at Gelucker Shops in Featherstone. The vehicle was escorted to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Featherstone station, where a thorough search was conducted.

During the search, police found dagga concealed in several locations within the bus.

"Police recovered dagga hidden in the luggage compartments of the bus. Further searches led to the recovery of nine wrapped packets of dagga in a monarch," said Detective Inspector Muteweri.

"A total of 26 packets of dagga were also recovered, stashed inside two wheels. The dagga weighed approximately 34kg."

The two accused individuals were subsequently arrested and have since appeared before a Magistrates' Court.

The bust is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb drug trafficking and smuggling along Zimbabwe's highways. Authorities have warned transport operators against aiding illegal activities, highlighting that anyone caught in such crimes will face the full wrath of the law.

Police have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities to help combat crime and ensure safety on the country's roads.
