Presidential Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary, Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti, has applauded Bulawayo Metropolitan Province for spearheading the most effective anti-smuggling campaign in the country. Eng Muguti made the remarks on Thursday during a visit to the city, where he engaged stakeholders and toured several manufacturing companies.
"I am happy that the anti-smuggling campaign in Bulawayo was the most successful in the country. It did way better than the capital itself. And we are seeing that more of the formal businesses are getting the right support from government," he said.
As a result of the crackdown, a variety of high-end vehicles and smuggled goods have been impounded and stored at the Container Depot Bulawayo (CONDEP). The vast facility currently holds a range of confiscated goods, including stoves, refrigerators, diapers, alcoholic beverages, tinned foods, and other items.
Under the Customs and Excise Act, smuggled goods can be detained for 60 to 90 days. Authorities use various disposal methods, such as rummage sales and destruction, to clear warehouses and ensure compliance with trade laws.
During his visit, Eng Muguti also toured key projects in the Matabeleland region, including Portland Cement (PPC) in Bulawayo, Carousel Manufacturing, Treger Products, and Blanket Mine in Gwanda. The visits aimed to assess the progress of high-impact projects and their contribution to regional development.
Eng Muguti emphasized the growing responsibility of Provincial Affairs and Devolution departments in driving economic growth. "Provincial departments are now expected to grow their provincial gross domestic product, which in turn will feed into the national budget," he said.
Bulawayo's success in combating smuggling has been hailed as a model for other regions, reinforcing the importance of coordinated efforts in strengthening the country's economy.
