The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued an advisory indicating a significant decrease in rainfall for the southern and western regions of the country. The dry spell is expected to last from today until Friday, January 31, affecting Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo, Matabeleland North, and Matabeleland South.
According to the MSD, the shift in rainfall patterns is due to moisture from the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) being pushed further north.
“Northern and eastern areas, including Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Manicaland, are expected to experience thundershowers. In contrast, Masvingo, Midlands, Bulawayo Metropolitan, and the Matabeleland provinces will see mostly sunny and hot conditions due to the circulation of relatively dry air over the southwestern parts of Zimbabwe,” said the MSD.
The MSD has urged the public in affected areas to prepare for the hot and sunny weather by taking precautionary measures.
“Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly and protect yourself from direct sunshine by wearing sun hats, sunglasses, and using umbrellas,” advised the department.
Farmers have been encouraged to closely monitor their crops for signs of heat stress and irrigate as needed, following guidance from agricultural extension officers.
“Ensure animals have adequate drinking water,” added the MSD, highlighting the importance of safeguarding livestock during this dry spell.
The MSD assured the public that it will continue providing updates as weather patterns evolve. Residents in northern and eastern parts of the country should remain alert to the possibility of thundershowers, while those in the south and west are advised to take the necessary precautions for the prevailing dry and hot conditions.
