A tragic workplace accident in Bulawayo's Belmont West has claimed the life of 32-year-old Proud Mashava, who was fatally crushed when a hydraulic wheel jack slipped while he was working under a truck.

The incident occurred on January 24 at approximately 3:20 PM when Mashava was conducting maintenance work on the truck. The hydraulic jack failed, causing the vehicle to fall and crush him underneath.

Coworkers at the scene acted quickly, using a 15-ton forklift to raise the truck and safely extricate Mashava's body from beneath the vehicle. However, despite their efforts, Mashava was found unresponsive.

Upon police arrival, Mashava's body was discovered lying on the ground with visible blood from his mouth and nose. The Acting Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the incident and explained the subsequent actions taken.

"The body was then ferried to the hospital for a post-mortem," she said in an official statement. "We advise members of the public, especially those who use heavy machinery at work, to be careful and ensure that the machines they are using are positioned properly and well-serviced to avoid such incidents."

Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. The tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by heavy machinery in work environments, prompting calls for heightened safety measures and vigilance to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
