The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit, originally scheduled for tomorrow, has been postponed to Friday, January 31. The Summit will focus on addressing the ongoing security situation in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Professor Amon Murwira, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, confirmed the delay, citing logistical adjustments as the primary reason for the change in schedule.

"The Extraordinary Summit is a crucial gathering for the Heads of State and Government from all SADC countries to discuss and make decisions on the peace efforts for Eastern DRC," said Minister Murwira. "We are in full throttle preparing for this Summit, which will be chaired by His Excellency, Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, who will lead discussions on restoring peace and stability in the region."

The summit comes at a time of escalating violence and conflict in eastern DRC, which has become a significant source of regional instability. Minister Murwira emphasized the importance of addressing this issue to safeguard the region's economic development. "Any instability in SADC is an affront to the region's economic development efforts," he said.

The summit will provide an opportunity for regional leaders to assess the situation in the DRC and make critical decisions regarding peacekeeping missions and further steps in resolving the conflict. Minister Murwira referenced President Mnangagwa's recent statement, in which he condemned the violence in the DRC and urged SADC to take decisive action.

"We look forward to the resolution of problems in the Eastern part of the DRC," said Minister Murwira. "Everything is set for the meeting, and we are confident that it will lead to concrete actions toward peace."

The leaders of SADC countries are expected to attend the Summit, which will focus on peace and security in the region, as well as the bloc's mission to restore tranquillity to the DRC.
