The Zanu-PF Economic Development Cluster has applauded President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his leadership in the transformation of the Beitbridge Border Post, a US$300 million infrastructure project under Zimbabwe's Second Republic.

The project, executed through a 17-and-a-half-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) concession with the Zimborders Consortium, has significantly enhanced the functionality and capacity of the border, which serves as a critical gateway between Zimbabwe, South Africa, and other SADC and East African countries.

Previously plagued by inefficiencies, the Beitbridge Border Post caused delays and frustrations that led many travelers and transporters to seek alternative routes through Botswana or Mozambique. This resulted in significant revenue losses for Zimbabwe. However, in 2018, the government prioritized the border's modernization, ensuring that its challenges were addressed comprehensively.

Under the BOT concession, the Zimborders Consortium financed the project and now manages the facility, while the Zimbabwean government provided land and technical services. The revamped border now boasts modern infrastructure, advanced ICT systems, expanded capacity, and enhanced security measures. These improvements have not only streamlined traffic flow but also boosted revenue collection and facilitated trade.

Zanu-PF Politburo members, including Retired Lieutenant General Engelbert Rugeje, the Secretary for Economic Affairs, recently visited the border to observe the transformation firsthand. During the tour, Lt Gen (Rtd) Rugeje highlighted the critical role of President Mnangagwa's administration in driving the country's development agenda.

"The resilience of the economy is a clear testimony of the visionary and astute leadership of His Excellency, President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa," Rugeje said. "The Second Republic has ushered in a new vision for Zimbabwe to become a prosperous and empowered upper-middle-income society earlier than 2030."

Zanu-PF Secretary for Business Development, Elifasi Mashaba, also praised the project for revolutionizing trade and travel between Zimbabwe and its neighbors. He emphasized the importance of efficiency among border agencies to fully realize the benefits of the modernized facility.

"The re-organisation of the border has resulted in improved revenue generation and collection, enhanced trade facilitation, and effective traffic control with the use of ICT," Mashaba said. "We want to thank our President, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, for his vision and leadership."

The Beitbridge Border Post transformation was executed in three phases to minimize disruptions during construction. The first phase focused on the freight terminal, road upgrades, and ICT enhancements. The second phase involved the construction of a new bus terminal, while the third phase saw the development of a light vehicle terminal and additional external works.

The modernization of Beitbridge has drawn widespread recognition, including visits from high-ranking officials such as South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The project is seen as a model for infrastructure development in the region and aligns with Zimbabwe's goal of achieving a prosperous, upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

This transformation marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, showcasing the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in driving economic growth and positioning the country as a key player in regional trade and commerce.
