In a historic milestone for the Air Force of Zimbabwe, Air Commodore Ellen Chiweshe was appointed the first-ever female commander of Jason Ziyapapa Moyo Air Force Base, located near Chegutu. Her appointment reflects President Emmerson Mnangagwa's commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality in key leadership positions.

Air Commodore Chiweshe's appointment marks a significant step in gender inclusivity within the Zimbabwean military. She is only the second female to ever command an Air Force of Zimbabwe air base, following the trailblazing tenure of the late Group Captain Mildred Dengura, who commanded Manyame Air Force Base from 2015 to 2016 and was later promoted to Air Commodore after her retirement.

The handover ceremony was officiated by the Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, Air Marshal John Jacob Nzvede, who highlighted the importance of this appointment in advancing the Government's gender equality policies.

"This momentous occasion is a result of the Air Force of Zimbabwe's continued support for gender mainstreaming in line with the Government of Zimbabwe's policies. The appointment of women like Air Commodore Chiweshe to such decision-making positions reflects the positive impact of equal opportunity policies in recruitment and promotions," said Air Marshal Nzvede.

He also emphasized the role of teamwork in achieving the Air Force's mission, urging all personnel at the base to support the incoming commander in executing military tasks effectively. Additionally, he addressed issues of discipline, warning against alcohol abuse and irresponsible gambling, which can undermine security and order within the force.

The outgoing commander, Air Commodore Nicholas Nyathi, expressed gratitude to the base community for their cooperation and support during his two-year tenure. He also thanked his wife for her unwavering support throughout his time in command.

Air Commodore Chiweshe, in her acceptance speech, expressed her commitment to delivering on the responsibilities of her new role.

"I will work to the best of my abilities to ensure that this recognition is not put to waste. I understand the importance of teamwork in achieving our military tasks and I am fully prepared to lead by example," she said.

Air Commodore Chiweshe's appointment has resonated deeply with fellow female officers at the base, who see it as a symbol of hope and progress. Warrant Class 1 Officer Memory Chivhinge, the base's veterinary officer, described the appointment as an inspiring moment for women in the Air Force.

"It's an incredible achievement to see a woman appointed to such a powerful and influential position. Air Commodore Chiweshe's success proves that women are capable of excelling in leadership roles, and this is an inspiration to all of us," she said.

Warrant Class 1 Officer Esma Madzima echoed these sentiments, expressing pride and respect for the Air Force leadership's decision to elevate a woman to this significant role.

"We feel truly honored by Air Commodore Chiweshe's appointment. It shows that women are being recognized for their abilities and merit, not their gender. As women, we feel respected and empowered by this milestone," she said.

With Air Commodore Chiweshe's historic appointment, the Air Force of Zimbabwe continues to make strides in fostering an environment where women can thrive in positions of power and influence. As she takes command at Jason Ziyapapa Moyo Air Force Base, her leadership will undoubtedly inspire future generations of female officers within the Zimbabwean military and beyond.
