Highlanders FC has secured a major boost for the upcoming 2025 season with the signing of 23-year-old defender Malvern Hativagoni on a season-long loan from Bulawayo Chiefs.

Hativagoni's arrival is seen as a crucial move to strengthen Highlanders' backline, particularly after the departure of their experienced defender, Peter Muduhwa, who moved to Scottland FC in Scotland. The club's defensive unit had been left vulnerable by this loss, but the acquisition of Hativagoni is expected to bring much-needed stability and depth.

The talented defender, who impressed during a loan spell at Ngezi Platinum Stars last season, is expected to play a pivotal role in Highlanders' quest for silverware in 2025. A source close to the deal confirmed the transfer, stating, "The deal is done. Hativagoni will be playing for Highlanders this season on a loan deal. It's a move that has the club excited because the team has brought in a quality player."

Highlanders' head coach, Kelvin Kaindu, is optimistic about the future of the club despite the loss of several key players, including Muduhwa, Godfrey Makaruse, Lynoth Chikuhwa, and Marvellous Chigumira, all of whom have joined Premiership newcomers Scottland FC. Kaindu, who led the team on an unbeaten 23-match run in 2012, is determined to end Highlanders' 18-year championship drought.

Speaking about the new acquisition, Kaindu expressed confidence in rebuilding the squad for the new season, with Hativagoni being a key addition to their defense.

Club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe also shared his excitement about the signing, acknowledging the challenges the club has faced in recruiting players due to the growing influence of player agents and managers in the market.

The 2025 season will kick off with the Castle Challenge Cup on February 22, featuring Dynamos, Chibuku Super Cup winners, and Simba Bhora, the reigning league champions. The new season is expected to start on March 1, and Highlanders will be hoping that the addition of Hativagoni will help them mount a serious challenge for the title.
