Police in Hwange, Matabeleland North, are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the relatives of a man who was fatally struck by a haulage truck along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway on November 30, 2024.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda, confirmed the incident, which occurred near the 335km peg along the highway.
"We can confirm that a pedestrian lost his life after being struck by a truck along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway," said Inspector Banda.
The driver of the vehicle, Tavonga Ticharwa (43), was operating a white Freightliner truck towing a single trailer. He had stopped at Glow Petroleum garage to refuel around 10pm on November 30 and later parked approximately 15 meters from the garage to rest.
The next morning, at around 6:30 AM, Ticharwa was startled to find a crowd gathered around his truck. Upon investigating, he discovered the body of the deceased, who had suffered severe injuries, including a dislodged right leg and multiple fractures on the right hand.
Investigations by the traffic police and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) revealed blood stains on the left wheels of the truck's trailer, which was parked near the scene.
The deceased's body was initially transported to Hwange Colliery Hospital mortuary before being moved to United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) for a post-mortem.
The police are now urging anyone who might recognize the deceased or have information about his identity to come forward. The man was reportedly wearing a blue T-shirt, grey trousers with a brown belt, and black North Star sports shoes with white borders.
The body is currently being held at Victoria Falls General Hospital, awaiting identification by family members.
Insp Banda confirmed that investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing and that the police are committed to uncovering further details.
