The ZANU PF Manicaland Province has formally recommended to the Politburo that Tinaye Elisha Nzirasha Chigudu be declared a national hero in recognition of his significant contributions during and after Zimbabwe's liberation struggle.

Chigudu, a distinguished politician and war veteran, passed away in Harare on Wednesday evening at the age of 83, leaving Manicaland and the nation in mourning.

ZANU PF Manicaland provincial chairman, Tawanda Mukodza, confirmed the recommendation yesterday, expressing hope that the Politburo would grant Chigudu this prestigious recognition.

"The passing of the former provincial chairman is a tremendous loss to both the province and the nation," Mukodza said. "The provincial party leadership unanimously agreed to request national hero status in recognition of his pivotal contributions during the liberation war and his exceptional service to Zimbabwe after independence."

Chigudu held numerous key positions in both ZANU PF and public service. These included serving as ZANU PF Manicaland provincial chairman, Governor of Manicaland Province, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. He was also a decorated war veteran whose liberation efforts have left an indelible mark on Zimbabwe's history.

Mukodza described Chigudu as a unifier and a "fountain of wisdom" who provided invaluable counsel in party and provincial matters. "He was someone I turned to for advice during challenges. His passing has left a gap that will be difficult to fill," Mukodza added.

Chigudu's story is one of resilience and sacrifice. As one of the first combatants trained in North Korea under ZIPRA, the military wing of ZAPU, he played a critical role in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle. His work as an intelligence officer in the then Salisbury (now Harare) demonstrated his bravery and commitment to the cause, despite operating in hostile territory.

His efforts were not without consequence. Chigudu was captured by Rhodesian forces and detained for 12 years. In an unprecedented move, Rhodesian authorities deported him to Britain, fearing his influence if reunited with fellow freedom fighters in Zambia or Rhodesia.

Family spokesperson Edgar Chigudu described his late brother as a pillar of strength and an advocate for unity. "His passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill," he said.

Shadreck Tongesayi Chipanga, a ZANU PF Central Committee member and close ally, praised Chigudu for his ethical leadership and unwavering dedication to hard work. "He was a straightforward leader who valued ethics and integrity in everything he did," Chipanga said.

National hero status is the highest honor Zimbabwe bestows on individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the country's liberation and development. The Politburo will now review the recommendation from Manicaland Province.

As Manicaland and Zimbabwe reflect on Chigudu's remarkable legacy, many remain hopeful that his sacrifices and service will be immortalized with the nation's highest accolade.
