A 28-year-old man from Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, has been fined US$120 or sentenced to two months in jail for stabbing his wife with a screwdriver during a domestic dispute.
Tushonupane Mwembe was convicted of physical abuse by Western Commonage magistrate Archie Wochihunga, who expressed concern over the rise in domestic violence cases.
"The courts should frown upon such offenders so that the community will see that the courts do not condone such behavior," said Mr. Wochihunga during sentencing.
Prosecutor Audrey Kufandikamwe told the court that the incident occurred on December 13 last year at around 9 PM. Mwembe stabbed his wife, Anna Mleya, on her back with a screwdriver following a misunderstanding.
The victim sustained chest lacerations and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The case highlights the increasing prevalence of domestic violence, with the courts reaffirming their commitment to delivering deterrent sentences to curb the trend.
