The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecast heavy rains and thunderstorms across several provinces in Zimbabwe this week and urged the public to take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

According to the MSD, localised heavy rains are likely today in the three Mashonaland provinces, Harare Metropolitan, Matabeleland North, northern Midlands, and Manicaland.

"Scattered thunderstorms are anticipated in the afternoon, with partly cloudy and mild conditions in the morning," the MSD said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and southern Midlands can expect partly cloudy and mild conditions in the morning, with hot and mostly cloudy weather by afternoon, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms.

The department also issued standard safety warnings, advising the public to seek proper shelter during thunderstorms, avoid crossing flooded rivers and low-lying bridges, and prioritize safety during adverse weather conditions.

Tomorrow, isolated thunderstorms are also expected in parts of Masvingo, northern Mashonaland West, and Midlands.

This comes after widespread thunderstorms swept across the country on Monday, with Chipinge recording the highest rainfall at 37mm, followed by Lupane with 36mm and Makoholi with 33mm. Other significant rainfall figures included 30mm in Chisengu and 27mm in West Nicholson.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed of weather updates and prepare for the wet conditions.
