A CAG Travellers Coaches driver, Thomas Chokuda, has been fined US$300 or three months in prison after being convicted of negligent driving. The incident occurred along the Harare-Chirundu Road on September 17, 2024, when the bus he was driving overturned, injuring 17 passengers.
Chokuda, 49, of Trafalgar, Norton, appeared before the Karoi Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charges. As part of the ruling, his Class 1 driver's licence was cancelled, and he has been banned from driving heavy vehicles for two years.
The court heard that Chokuda was driving a Zhongtong bus carrying 36 passengers when he applied emergency brakes to avoid a herd of cattle crossing the road. The sudden braking caused the bus to overturn, resulting in minor injuries to 17 passengers.
Magistrate Tavengwa Timeon Makunde ruled that Chokuda was guilty of speeding, failing to maintain a proper look-out, and losing control of the vehicle.
The case has sparked renewed concern over road safety on Zimbabwe's highways, particularly regarding the management of livestock and driver accountability. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise greater caution to prevent similar accidents.
