An elderly man collapsed and died at the corner of Herbert Chitepo Street and Fifth Avenue on Thursday afternoon in what is suspected to be a case of sudden death.
Eyewitnesses said the man had been driving a white Nissan pick-up when the vehicle suddenly veered off course and rammed into a street curb. Concerned vendors rushed to the scene, where the man signaled to them that he was in distress.
"We helped him out of the car, and he indicated that he was diabetic and was in distress. We laid him on the ground to help him rest, but he started convulsing," one of the vendors recounted.
Despite their efforts, the man's condition worsened, and he was declared dead upon the arrival of the police.
When reporters arrived at the scene, officers were in the process of collecting the body for transfer to a local mortuary. The vehicle remained at the scene, as authorities had yet to notify the deceased's next of kin.
