ZIMBABWE will train 1.5 million young people as software engineers, developers, and programmers under the Zimbabwe Digital Skills Development Program launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Speaking at a gathering on Friday to mark the National Youth Day in the country's second-largest city of Bulawayo, Mnangagwa said the program will improve digital literacy and skills among the youth and empower a new generation of professionals who can contribute to the country's technological innovation.
"This will enhance the employability of our young people while empowering the youth and fostering economic growth. Furthermore, the program encourages innovation and creativity as well as entrepreneurship through the development of local tech solutions and start-ups," said Mnangagwa.
Under the newly launched program, which will be implemented in partnership with the United Arab Emirates, young people will gain skills in three key areas: programming fundamentals, data science fundamentals, and Android developer fundamentals.
"In this digital age, you must be equipped with the necessary skills to navigate the complex global ecosystem. The rapid application of artificial intelligence entails that we must adapt to the fast-changing world by capacitating ourselves, sector by sector, with the requisite digital proficiency and capabilities," said Mnangagwa.
The National Youth Day, which is celebrated on Feb. 21, was proclaimed a public holiday in 2017 to recognize and celebrate the contributions of young people to Zimbabwe's development.
