A 29-year-old Mabvuku man, Vumani Ndlovu, appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on Friday facing two counts of impersonating a police officer. Ndlovu was remanded out of custody and will appear again on March 5 before Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki.
According to prosecutor Alice Miriro, the alleged incidents occurred in January this year. In the first case, Ndlovu approached the complainant, Daniel Ndomera, at his workplace at Kuwadzana 2 shops. Ndlovu reportedly introduced himself as a police officer and informed Ndomera that he was under arrest for practicing without a medical license. Ndlovu allegedly told Ndomera that he would be taken to the police station to pay a fine.
Ndomera, who reportedly had no money, offered Ndlovu US$2 as a bribe, which Ndlovu accepted, according to court documents.
In a separate incident, Ndlovu allegedly introduced himself as the new police general to another complainant, Fadzai Masiyiwa. Ndlovu told Masiyiwa that she was under arrest for practicing without a medical license. He then demanded a bribe to allow her to continue practicing without proper authorization. It is claimed that Masiyiwa gave Ndlovu US$5, after which he left the scene.
Ndlovu is facing charges for impersonating a police officer and soliciting bribes. The court proceedings are ongoing.
