Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has gifted a brand-new 2024 Toyota Fortuner and US$50,000 in cash to Eunice Dembo, the widow of Zimbabwean music legend Leonard Dembo, in response to her public plea for financial assistance.
Eunice, who now relies on a wheelchair, recently expressed her struggles, including difficulties accessing medical care and a sense of abandonment by the music industry despite her late husband's lasting impact. Dembo, famed for hits such as Chitekete, Shamwari Yangu Warova, and Ruva Rashe, remains one of Zimbabwe's most celebrated musicians.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on National Youth Day (February 21), Chivayo announced his decision to assist Eunice, stating that it was heartbreaking to see Dembo's family living in hardship despite the singer's immense contribution to Zimbabwean music.
"In the spirit of EMPOWERMENT, I have been deeply moved by the online PLEA from Mrs. Eunice Dembo, the widow of the legendary Zimbabwean music icon, LEONARD DEMBO, for financial support," Chivayo wrote.
"Despite the distinguished musical genius that DEMBO was, selling more than 100,000 copies of his album and music played at the Miss World Pageant in 1994, it breaks my heart that his family has NOT benefited from his LEGACY and his wife now lives in destitution."
He instructed Eunice to collect the fully paid-for vehicle from Exquisite Car Sale on February 22 and provided a security team to ensure her safety while handling the money.
In addition to assisting Eunice, Chivayo also gifted each of Dembo's three children - Tendai, Morgan, and Fenistia - a Toyota Aqua.
"National Youth Day is about SECURING THE FUTURE for all YOUNG Zimbabweans, and no young person who carries the legacy of our HEROES should be left behind," he said.
He urged the Dembo children to visit Enterprise Car Sale to collect their vehicles, reinforcing his message of youth empowerment.
Chivayo, known for his extravagant generosity, has previously made high-profile donations to local artists, church leaders, and individuals in need. His latest gesture has been met with mixed reactions - some praising him for supporting a struggling family, while others question his motives.
For Eunice and her children, however, Chivayo's intervention provides much-needed financial relief and mobility, helping them sustain Dembo's musical legacy.
