Woman convicted for beer bottle attack over foot-stepping dispute

A 24-year-old woman has been convicted of assault after attacking another woman with an empty beer bottle during an argument at the Palace Hotel in Bulawayo.
Immaculate Ngwenya was found guilty by Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube after pleading guilty to the charge. She is set to return to court today for sentencing.
According to prosecutor Mufaro Ndirayire, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 31, around 4 AM, at the Palace Hotel, located at the corner of Jason Moyo Street and 11th Avenue. Ngwenya allegedly became violent after an argument with Ms. Ellen Moyo over stepping on her foot. She slapped Moyo before smashing a beer bottle on her forehead, leaving her with a deep cut.
During mitigation, Ngwenya told the court that she works in a bar as a prostitute, earning only US$30 per month. She further explained that she is the sole provider for her two young children, aged four years and one year, eight months, as well as her parents.
Magistrate Ncube is expected to deliver her sentence later today.
