The body of 22-year-old Andrew Matete was retrieved from the murky waters of Nyanzuda River after a two-day search, with his lips missing, suspected to have been eaten by aquatic creatures.
The grisly discovery was confirmed by acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, bringing a tragic end to the search for Matete, who was last seen by his 13-year-old sister on the evening of February 21 as he set out for a fishing trip near Mapopoma Falls.
"On February 21, 2025, at around 6:30 PM, Andrew Matete went fishing with his 13-year-old sister. Along the way, he advised her to return home since it was getting dark, and he proceeded alone but never returned," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
His disappearance was not reported, but on February 23, at around 7:30 PM, local villagers spotted a floating body in the river. Upon being informed, Matete's father, 63-year-old Robert Matete, rushed to the scene and positively identified his son's remains.
"Police in Penhalonga attended the scene and retrieved the body. Officers observed that aquatic animals had eaten Matete's upper and lower lips, and he had bruises on his back. The body was conveyed to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post-mortem. Investigations are ongoing," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
In an unrelated case, a body of an unidentified male adult was found floating in Rusape River by a resident washing his clothes.
"On January 23, 2025, at around 1 PM, Fungai Murisa (46) of Vengere was washing clothes near the Rusape River gauges when he discovered a body floating in the water. He retrieved it and reported the matter to the police," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Police examined the body and found no visible injuries. It was transported to Rusape General Hospital for post-mortem, and investigations are underway.
