A security guard at Eastern Highlands Tea Plantation Estate in Honde Valley has been arrested following the fatal shooting of an unidentified man during a late-night ambush aimed at thwarting suspected theft.
Lovemore Matsanura (53) is now in police custody in connection with the May 4, 2025 shooting, which occurred around 8:30pm.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, revealing that the fatality resulted from a confrontation between estate security and a group of individuals believed to have hidden 90kg of organic manure in a tea field earlier that morning.
According to police reports, Matsanura discovered the hidden sacks around 9:30am, prompting an ambush response involving six security guards, including Yadlin Muchangweya (25) and Moses Waramba (47).
Later that night, the suspects reportedly returned to collect the manure. As they approached the site, they were intercepted by Waramba, who was threatened with machetes. In response, Waramba fired a warning shot, causing the group to scatter. Muchangweya also fired a shot into the air during the confusion.
One of the fleeing individuals was pursued by a security guard and was later found collapsed with a gunshot wound just above the waist. Police were called, and officers from ZRP Ruda responded swiftly to the scene.
"The deceased was found with a gunshot wound above the waist. Both firearms used during the incident have been seized for ballistics analysis," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
The deceased's body was taken to Hauna District Hospital for a post-mortem, while Muchangweya and Waramba were also arrested and are currently cooperating with investigations.
Matsanura was later arrested as investigations intensified into the use of force and the chain of events that led to the death.
Police are now working to identify the deceased and fully determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged security personnel to exercise greater restraint and avoid excessive use of force, warning against becoming "trigger-happy" in performing their duties.
Investigations are ongoing.
