Two Burundian nationals were last week convicted at the Karoi Magistrates Court after being caught illegally entering Zimbabwe through the Chirundu Border Post without proper documentation.

The pair, Emmanuel Nyandwi (33) and Obede Tayisenge (25), was charged with contravening immigration laws and convicted for entering the country without passing through an authorised port of entry.

Appearing before a local magistrate, both men were fined US$150 each, with the alternative of one month imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

The court heard that on May 7, 2025, the duo was found hitchhiking at a local fuel station when they were approached by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Chirundu. After identifying themselves, the officers requested to see valid travel documents. Nyandwi and Tayisenge failed to produce any, leading to their arrest.

Following their conviction, the two now await deportation back to Burundi.

Illegal migration through Zimbabwe's porous borders continues to be a challenge for law enforcement authorities, prompting periodic crackdowns across major transit points such as Chirundu, Beitbridge, and Nyamapanda.
