Bulawayo signs landmark innovation MoU

The City of Bulawayo has made a strategic leap towards becoming the nation's innovation powerhouse by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Research Council of Zimbabwe (RCZ), Zimbabwe Open University, and Bulawayo Polytechnic during last week's Research and Innovation Seminar.

The MoU, inked at a high-level seminar that brought together key academic and government stakeholders, aims to strengthen collaboration on research-driven initiatives and establish innovation hubs designed to support startups and small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

The agreement comes at a critical time as Zimbabwe positions itself for inclusive growth under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the anticipated NDS2, both of which emphasise innovation and knowledge-based solutions as engines of economic transformation.

Bulawayo Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube hailed the partnership as a catalyst for practical innovation.
"We are ready to accelerate the piloting of promising ideas into tangible products," he said, affirming the city's commitment to nurturing a vibrant research and innovation ecosystem.

RCZ Executive Director Dr Partson Chikudza echoed the sentiment, underscoring the role of collaborative action in tackling urban challenges and unlocking economic potential.
"Local authorities like Bulawayo Municipality are not merely facilitators of development, but co-creators of knowledge," Dr Chikudza said, urging unified support for innovators and researchers.

The seminar featured in-depth presentations on translating research into market-ready products, green financing, and successful case studies from aviation, tourism, and agriculture—showcasing the broad scope of potential impact.

Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube, represented by the director in her office, Mr Saimon Saunyama, reiterated government support for innovation as a tool for sustainable growth.
"Innovation is critical in driving economic progress, particularly in areas such as sustainable energy and technology," she noted.

The MoU is expected to bridge the longstanding gap between academia and industry, ensuring that research is not just theoretical but directly applicable to real-world problems.

This collaborative venture stands as a testament to Bulawayo's resolve to lead Zimbabwe's innovation agenda, fostering a future where local ingenuity drives national development.
