The Government has released ZiG516.4 million to various local authorities to support social infrastructure development and the procurement of critical equipment, Finance Deputy Minister David Mnangagwa has announced.
Speaking in Parliament during a question-and-answer session, Mnangagwa said the funds were part of the broader devolution programme designed to empower local authorities and enhance service delivery at the grassroots level.
"To date, ZiG516.4 million has been disbursed to various local authorities targeting social infrastructural development and procurement of equipment," said Mnangagwa.
He highlighted that while Treasury remained committed to making quarterly devolution disbursements in accordance with the Zimbabwe Inter-governmental Fiscal Transfer Systems Administrative Manual, there was a need for more strategic coordination.
"Benefiting tiers of government must proactively engage the line ministry and Treasury to align cashflow disbursements with their implementation plans. This ensures that some of the targeted projects and programmes are effectively implemented and completed," he added.
Mnangagwa also noted that delays and limited devolution disbursements in some areas were due to competing national priorities, such as road construction and other infrastructure initiatives that required immediate funding.
Responding to a question about the allocation to Kadoma, Mnangagwa said specific figures on cash resources availed to that local authority would be obtained from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
The devolution programme is one of the key strategies under the Second Republic's agenda to promote inclusive development by decentralising resources and decision-making powers to local governance structures.
