A group of armed robbers struck Gains Cash and Carry Wholesale in Murambinda on May 24, 2025, making off with a total of US$11,187 and R31,300 in a well-coordinated heist. Authorities have revealed that part of the stolen funds belonged to Mukuru, a financial service operator.
According to Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the robbery unfolded in the evening hours. Security guard Stanley Chabooka, 39, was on duty armed with a rifle and accompanied by a bulldog when the security alarm sounded around 6 pm. Upon investigating, Chabooka found no signs of disturbance.
However, when the alarm went off again at about 8 pm, Chabooka informed the store manager, Mr. Obey Mereka (39), who instructed him to conduct a thorough check of the premises. During the inspection, the dog began barking, and Chabooka spotted five men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas. One suspect carried a pistol while the others wielded wooden logs.
Attempting to flee, Chabooka was stopped and threatened by the armed robbers. He complied and was tied up with shoelaces. When asked if others were present, Chabooka mentioned a driver, Kudakwashe Munyoro (36), who had recently delivered a truck. The suspects then dragged Chabooka to where Munyoro was and tied him up as well.
While one suspect guarded the two captives, the others broke a toilet window to gain entry into the wholesale premises. Inside, they forced open three offices and ransacked them. The robbers also tampered with the CCTV system before cutting the safe's locking mechanism.
In total, the thieves stole US$2,016 belonging to Gains Cash and Carry, as well as US$9,115 and R31,300 belonging to Mukuru. At around 4 am, both Chabooka and Munyoro managed to free themselves and reported the incident to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Murambinda, who promptly responded to the scene.
No stolen funds have been recovered so far. Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could help bring the suspects to justice.
"We appeal to members of the community with information related to the case to report to the nearest police station as it is crucial in bringing the fugitives to justice," he said.
The investigation continues as police seek leads on the whereabouts of the robbers.
