Three people lost their lives and 18 others sustained injuries in a serious road accident involving a passenger bus and two haulage trucks on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls highway on Wednesday evening.
According to Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the tragedy occurred when the Stallion Cruise bus, traveling from Binga to Bulawayo, attempted to overtake another truck but collided head-on with an oncoming haulage vehicle.
"One male passenger was thrown from the bus into the front passenger seat of the truck and died on the spot. A female passenger traveling in the haulage truck also succumbed to the impact," Inspector Msebele confirmed.
She explained that the bus first sideswiped the truck it was trying to overtake before veering into the path of the approaching truck.
The 18 injured passengers were rushed to hospital for medical attention, though their current conditions have not yet been disclosed.
The Stallion Cruise bus suffered severe front-end damage, including a shattered windscreen and a bent bonnet, while the oncoming truck also sustained significant damage.
Inspector Msebele attributed the accident to speeding, driver error, and misjudgment. The bus driver is now facing charges of culpable homicide.
"Police are appealing to all motorists to drive responsibly, avoid speeding, and comply with road traffic laws to prevent further loss of life," she urged.
