Four members of the Matonde family, including a three-year-old girl, died instantly in a tragic road accident along the Karoi-Binga Road on Sunday evening.

The crash occurred around 6:30pm near the 25km peg, involving a Ford Ranger carrying seven passengers and a Honda Fit overloaded with 12 people, totaling 19 individuals on board.

The deceased have been identified as Juliet Matonde (32), Letwin Matonde (3), Debra Matonde (8), and Eunice Matonde (13), all from Dixie Farm in Magunje.

The overloaded Honda Fit, commonly used as mushikashikas and notorious for carrying excessive passengers, was at the center of attention once again, raising concerns over road safety and enforcement of traffic regulations in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the fatal crash.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road accident which occurred on 15 June 2025 at 18:30hrs at the 25km peg along the Karoi/Binga Road where a Ford Ranger vehicle with seven passengers on board collided with a Honda Fit vehicle carrying 12 passengers," Commissioner Nyathi stated.

"As a result, four people died on the spot while 15 others were seriously injured."

The injured were rushed to Karoi District Hospital for treatment, while the victims' bodies were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

This tragic incident once again highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, particularly regarding vehicle overloading, which continues to pose significant risks on Zimbabwe's roads.
