The ruling Zanu-PF party has expressed willingness to readmit former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi, currently in custody, should he choose to rejoin and fulfill all party requirements.

Mzembi, who spent years in exile in Zambia, returned to Zimbabwe last week and was arrested at the airport. He faces multiple outstanding arrest warrants related to charges of criminal abuse of office and theft of trust property. His trial, which began in his absence, is set to resume on July 1 after he was denied bail and remanded in custody.

Speaking to ZiFM radio on Wednesday, Zanu-PF Information Director Farai Marapira emphasized that Mzembi's readmission is contingent upon following formal party procedures.

"If he wishes to rejoin, there are processes through which this is done, and if these processes are fulfilled and the requirements that are needed for his reentry are fulfilled again, then of course the party will take him in," Marapira said.

He added that the party continually welcomes both new and former members, but the decision to readmit any individual rests on the party's discretion. "It has to be in the party's wisdom to see if it is worthwhile to readmit him or not to do so," he explained.

Reports indicated that Mzembi was scheduled to meet President Emmerson Mnangagwa upon his return and had shown interest in rejoining Zanu-PF.

For now, Mzembi remains in custody as the judicial process continues, with his corruption trial set to resume at the end of the month.
