A 74-year-old man tragically lost his life after being viciously attacked by a swarm of bees in Marondera's central business district on Saturday, 21 June 2025. The disturbing incident occurred near a streetlight pole opposite the Marondera Government Complex, where a beehive had reportedly gone undisturbed for some time.

According to eyewitnesses, the bees had been unusually aggressive throughout the morning, stinging several people who unknowingly ventured too close to the hive. The elderly man, who has not yet been publicly named, was passing through the area when the bees descended on him in a frenzied attack.

Despite his efforts to fend off the swarm and cry for help, the attack proved too intense. Bystanders initially tried to come to his aid, but they too were chased and stung by the aggressive bees, forcing them to retreat to safety.

One witness, Mr Chikwerengwe Mavishu, who sustained bee stings during the incident, recounted the harrowing moments. "I was close when I saw him being attacked, and he called for help. When I tried to assist, I was also attacked and had to call the police. When they arrived, it was too late as he was already unconscious," he said.

Emergency services, including police and officials from the Marondera Municipality, eventually arrived at the scene and rushed the man to Marondera Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The chaotic situation continued even after authorities began clearing the area. A ZBC News crew present at the scene witnessed another individual being stung by the same swarm while attempting to flee, underscoring the severity of the danger posed by the bees.

The Marondera Municipality is yet to issue an official statement regarding the presence of the hive in such a busy area, and residents are now calling for urgent intervention to prevent similar tragedies.
