The Government has unveiled the KoBoCollect Stock Card, a new hybrid system designed to enhance the management of livestock data across Zimbabwe by combining a physical card with a digital tracking platform.
The innovation aims to provide real-time data access, greater accuracy, and improved transparency in livestock monitoring, empowering both farmers and veterinary officials to make more informed decisions.
According to the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS), each livestock owner will receive a physical stock card embedded with a unique identification code linked to a digital record. The platform can be accessed via a mobile application and a web-based interface, allowing seamless tracking and updating of livestock information.
Speaking at the announcement, DVS chief director Dr Pious Makaya described the new system as a game-changer for the agricultural sector.
"We are pleased to announce that the rollout of the new stock card is imminent. With sufficient stocks available, we are confident that all livestock owners nationwide will have access to this important tool," said Dr Makaya.
He explained that the stock card would greatly improve record-keeping practices, facilitate efficient veterinary services, and boost productivity through enhanced planning and decision-making.
"The new stock card system is designed to provide numerous benefits to livestock owners, including improved record-keeping, enhanced transparency and better decision-making. This tool is poised to revolutionise livestock data management and enable more informed decision-making at the national level," Dr Makaya added.
The KoBoCollect Stock Card initiative aligns with the government's broader digital transformation agenda and efforts to modernise the country's agricultural systems. Authorities say the system will also help streamline responses to disease outbreaks and provide a more accurate picture of Zimbabwe's national herd.
The digital platform is expected to be rolled out in phases, with training and support offered to farmers, veterinary personnel and other stakeholders to ensure smooth adoption.
